Romero's Bay Area Venture News

John Romero establishes a new studio but stays quiet on the details...

A rather belated catch up with John Romero today revealed that the man behind Doom, Quake and⦠Daikatana has set up a new studio operating in San Fransicoâs Bay Area.

No specific details are known on the venture except for the claim that heâs âmuch happierâ since parting ways with Midway. Romero joined the US publisher along with fellow id Software and Ion Storm veteran Tom Hall in 2003, where he commenced work on Gauntlet: Seven Shadows alongside Josh Sawyer of Black Isle Studio fame.

As TVG revealed in an interview with Sawyer, Romero moved off the project to become Creative Director at Midway San Diego, however rumours still persisted of his unrest and Midwayâs apparent displeasure with the form the game was taking.

Romero eventually parted ways with Midway in June 2005 but refused to discuss the reasons behind the decision. A month after Sawyer chatted to us the acclaimed designer also confirmed his resignation from Midway to join the team at Obsidian Entertainment on Neverwinter Night 2, leaving the state of the still to-be-released Gauntlet: Seven Shadows in some doubt.

Coincidentally Tom Hall also left the employment of Midway during the year and is now known to be collaborating on a as-of-yet unannounced Massively-Multiplayer-Online-Game (MMOG).

Weâll have more on Romeroâs new venture hopefully soonâ¦
