Legendary game designers John Romero and Josh Sawyer announce the resurrection of a well loved franchise...
Midway Games have today announced that the classic franchise Gauntlet is to be resurrected in Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows for the Playstation2 and Xbox. The widely rumoured title is currently under the careful watch of the living legend that is John Romero (he of Doom and Quake fame), along with Josh Sawyer at Midwayâs San Diego studios.
The game is an intense fusion of fantasy action elements combined with an RPG system, and follows the story of a band of heroes who set out to destroy a powerful Emperor. After failing, they are brutally crucified only to be saved and mysteriously set free to finish what they had startedâ“ itâs now up to the heroes to undo the so-called âSeven Sorrowsâ that the Emperor has committed in the past, before his plans destroy the world.
Announcing the game, Matt Booty, Senior Vice President of Product Development, Midway said, "Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows captures the nostalgia of the legendary franchise, and also delivers the darkest, most intense Gauntlet saga everâ¦Blending an intuitive combat system, accessible RPG elements, and new junction skills, Seven Sorrows features the dynamic co-op it's known for, and, for the first time ever, it is online supporting up to four players."
We have many fond memories of playing the original both at the arcades and on our 8-bit consoles/computers many moons ago, so weâll keep a very close eye on this one.
Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows is scheduled for release in winter 2005...
