Rock Band PS3 Patch Allegedly Halted By Activision News

A Rock Band patch allowing Guitar Hero III peripheral compatibility has apparently been vetoed by Activision...


While Xbox 360 owners in the US are able to use Guitar Hero III controllers in Rock Band, a shadow has been cast over the same compatibility on the PlayStation 3. A Rock Band PS3 patch that would allow this - scheduled for release on December 4th - has supposedly been grounded by publishers Activision.

Developers/Publishers of Rock Band, Harmonix and MTV Games, have now spoken out about this alleged move by Activision in a statement (taken from Joystiq):

"Two weeks ago, Harmonix created a software patch for the Sony PlayStation 3 version of Rock Band that allowed for guitar compatibility and support for third party peripherals, including enabling use of Activision's Guitar Hero III controller with Rock Band. The compatibility patch was submitted, approved and had been scheduled for release by Sony on Tuesday, December 4th. Unfortunately, Activision objected to the release of the compatibility patch. The patch remains with Sony, but we have been told that it will unfortunately not be released due to Activision's continued objection."

Harmonix and MTV Games also maintained their stance on an "Open standard philosophy of hardware and game compatibility," adding that:

"We sincerely hope that Activision will reverse its decision and allow release of the compatibility patch and further, that Activision will allow Guitar Hero III to support Rock Band guitar controllers as well. We welcome all third party developers who wish to support our controllers and will provide any required support in order for them to do so."

It seems that PS3 owners may have to empty their pockets upon Rock Band's early 2008 European release.

When contacted by TVG, Activision declined to comment on the accusations made by Harmonix and MTV Games.

I can see alot of ebay shops setting up just importing Rockband to the EU, they will make loads, people get it cheaper and quicker. At the full price EA wants for it the game is a dead duck in the EU.

Activision is being really stupid about all of this. I am betting they are thinking that this kind of game is just a fad or something and is hoping to control the market as much as they can. All I can say about that is look at the whole IBM vs Mac ... [ Read full comment... ]

I was extreamly dissapointed, I bought both and its really is bad. They win I paid down my 60 bucks for the rockband extra guitar that will be out in april. Bad activision..bad!
