id announce Quake IV plus a whole host of information on Doom 3 and other titles.
Well QuakeCon 2001 has been and gone. id Software used the oppurtunity to divulge a few details on their highly awaited upcoming titles.
Unsuprisingly Quake IV is in development, being farmed out to the very capable hands of Raven Software, they of Soldier of Fortune fame, making it the first Quake title not to be developed by id themselves. The game is set in the Quake 2 universe and will utilize the Doom III engine, so expect some stunning lighting effects. Unfortunately we won't be seeing anything until 2003 at the earliest.
Whilst addressing the conference, id CEO, John Cormack went on to say that Doom III would be unable to run on the PS2 without graphical constrictions. However he noted that a version would be possible on the Xbox and hinted that the game may debut on the machine before a PC release.
Cormack also confirmed that Quake IV is not scheduled for a PS2 release at all, suggesting that if interest arose it would be handled by an external development team.
Nerve Software, a new development team headed by ex-Quake developer Brandon James are currently putting the final touches to the multiplayer aspects of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. When the team has finished they plan to start work on an all-new online id multiplayer project. The project was first mooted before id's return to the Doom and Wolfenstien franchises, besides the facts that it is set to be a co-operative game and fully online nothing else is known.
The Quake III tournament was won by ZeRo4, who walked away with a cool cheque to the value of $30,000. Congratulations...
