The gameplay in GUNPEY consists of rows of panels climbing upwards from the bottom of the screen which players must flip and move to connect the lines inside the panels. When a line spans the width of the screen the panels will explode making room for more. It's game over if the panels rise all the way to the top of the screen. Each action by the player changes the game's music so that skilled players can even deliver their very own musical performance.

The Lumines and Rez creator executively produces Gunpey update for PSP and DS...

Speaking to Japanese publication Famitsu, Tetsuya Mizugushi has confirmed that he's working as Executive Producer for updated versions of the Wonderswan puzzler, Gunpey (created by the late Gunpey Yokoi, creator of the original GameBoy). The title, Gunpey-R, is being developed for PSP and Nintendo DS, with publishing duties by Namco Bandai - although a publisher is yet to be announced for outside the country.

In the game, players will have to create lines across the screen by moving blocks before they reach the top of the screen; Mizugushi confirmed in the interview that both handheld versions will have their own subtle visual/audio differences.

It's been a busy time for Mizugushi in the last couple of years, having created Lumines for PSP (and the three new instalments in the pipeline), and Ninety-Nine Nights for Xbox 360, but it doesn't seem that his team at Q Entertainment are ready to have any sort of break just yet.

We'll have more on Gunpey-R shortly...

[Update]Namco Bandai of America have confirmed that a North American release of the game, to be simply called 'Gunpey', will take place during the 2006 Holiday season. A European publisher is yet to be announced...
