After an eight-year disappearance, 3D Realms shooter returns for the PC and Next-Gen consoles...
Shortly after development had concluded and Duke Nukem was unleashed to the world in 1994, the guys at 3D Realms began work on an original concept dubbed Prey. The synopsis saw players assume the role of a Native American pitted against a mysterious alien race, in classic Duke Nukem 3D/Doom fashion.
Despite being in development for over three years and farmed out to another team, Prey never saw the light of day and quickly became something of videogame legend... that is until today, as 2K Games continues to establish itself with confirmation of the heavily rumoured title.
Currently in development at Human Head Studios and scheduled for a 2006 release on the PC and Next-Gen consoles, 3D Realms outspoken President, George Broussard claimed âThe initial concept for Prey had been incubating for a while, waiting for the right opportunity to come along," adding "We jumped at the chance to create this game with a talented developer like Human Head Studios and next-generation technology like the Doom 3 engine."
Scott Miller, CEO of 3D Realms, added, "Prey is special for many reasons, including several new and original gameplay features and a tightly integrated story that packs an emotional punch, unlike other first person shooters."
"Our collaboration with 3D Realms has been enormously rewarding," added Timothy Gerritsen, CEO of Human Head Studios. "With their help, Prey is sure to breathe new life into the first person shooter genre with a compelling story, innovative gameplay mechanics and dazzling imagery, which is powered by our significantly enhanced version of id Software's original Doom 3 engine."
A quick peek at the official site reveals the trademark 3D Realms humour, as what appears to be a common site placeholder changes to a Prey advertisement after a short time and a subtle little hint at Duke Nukem â“ âEarthâs Saviour Doesnât Want The Job!â
Prey is forming part of ATIâs E3 exhibition and weâll be sure to have more details from there.
