Japanese figures show a sharp decline in PS2 sales during the first half of 2003...
Many industry experts and financial bigwigs have predicted a tough time for Sony in the next couple of years whilst gamers wait for the launch of the Playstation3. This was backed today, as it emerged that sales of the Playstation2 had fallen by 33% compared to the same period last year.
During the first half of 2003 Sony had shifted 1,085,560 units in Japan, compared to 1,620,239 in the first half of 2003. In the same period it was noticed that GameCube sales have increased by 5% in the same period, with a 9000 increase in units shifted; whilst Xbox figures were considered too low to even begin worrying about.
Itās been widely speculated that Sony will reduce the Playstation2 to $99 at some point in 2004; a figure that is only likely to boost sales during a period of natural decline and place further pressure on Microsoft to bring the Xbox below the $100 figure.
