PlayStation Portable Specifications News

They should have called it the PlayStation2 portable...
Sony recently held an event in Japan called PlayStation Meeting 2003, Japanese release schedules were confirmed, but more interestingly for us we get the full specs for the PlayStation Portable.
It seems Sony have waited until the technology available them will allow them to do something spectacular. We have recently seen articles talking about Sony and other companies manufacturing portable processors for palmtops that can reach speeds of up to 500mhz, we hoped that such power would be available for the PSP, although we assumed it would be a little slower, for cost and stability.
The main processor of the PSP is runs at 333MHz - that is ten times faster than the main processor in the PSOne, and is comparable in to the PlayStation2. Oh, and there's two of them, the second one apparently being used for the media engine, decoding video and things like that. We don't know if these can be used together for games, or if the media processor is dedicated and untouchable. We're sure all will be revealed in due course.
We would like some clarification of the two graphic units, they seem powerful but arbitrary polygon counts can be misleading. However, 33 million polygons a second, even if this is two, or even four times what it will be in real-life applications, is still a huge figure for a portable machine.
The sound processor can do 7.1 surround sound and lots of real-time effects. That's just silly.
This power will not come with a huge energy consumption, it seems all of the components are designed to run at 1.2Volts, which is rather low.
It has four face buttons, with the shapes on, a direction pad, analogue stick and shoulder buttons, can't really ask for more.
The machine will be on show at next years E3 in prototype form, software will be demonstrated at the Tokyo Game Show next year. Release will be in the last quarter of next year, and will apparently be a world-wide affair.
Full development kits will ship to developers early next year.
Remember we have been told that the cost of the machine will be around £95-£150, which will translate to a similar US Dollar figure.
The ball is well and truly in Nintendo's court.
If you want to see how the PSP fits into Sony's broad plans then take a look at our in-depth feature - written before we knew these specifications.
