PSP Virus Invalidates Warranty - Sony News

Reports of a Trojan virus effectively killing PSPs draws an official statement from SCE...
As reports of a Trojan spreading through the web infecting PSPs emerge, Sony Computer Entertainment has released a statement commenting that such PSPs have voided their warranties. Why? Well the rogue program hides itself as a PSP firmware downgrader called âEXPLOIT 2G PSP Team V1.RARâ, which when installed onto a PSP removes key files that stop the portable system from booting up.
Since the use of downgraders (and the subsequent running of homebrew applications and emulators) have been looked upon by Sony with utter contempt, the statement is hardly surprising:
"Sony Computer Entertainment does not condone the activities of those who modify their PSP, as it can introduce unauthorised and potentially dangerous software code into the PSP and invalidate the warranty. PSPs damaged through such activity will not be covered under the PSP's warranty. PSP firmware upgrades are made available from time to time to upgrade the performance of the PSP and address any potential security issues. SCE recommends that users regularly update their PSPs through the PSP's System Update feature to ensure that they always receive the optimum experience from their PSP".
So there you have it, beware of downgraders, they could be bad for your PSPâs healthâ¦
