PSP Sales Take A Nosedive News

Sony PSP sales plummet while Xbox 360s are flying off the shelves in the run-up to Halo 3's release...

MCV report that sales of Sony's PSP were 32% higher this time last year, according to figures from British firm ChartTrack, which also show that last week was the PSP's worst sales period since launch.

Sony have pointed out that consumers are simply holding off in anticipation of the new PSP Lite (due out on September 14th). ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch told MCV: "There are probably a lot of consumers who are now waiting for Slim & Lite to arrive. The fact that kids are returning to school is also sure to have had a marked effect. There are always bad words to say about a dip like this, but there may well be a sales spike in week 37 after the new console is launched."

Conversely, the Xbox 360 enjoyed a 260% rise in sales two weeks ago after the introduction of the Elite model and, perhaps more contributory to the rise, price cuts on the other two Xbox 360 units. These figures dipped only 20% the following week and, with the imminent release of Halo 3 atop a £4 million marketing campaign, Microsoft are at least experiencing a brief resurgence.

"We've seen what the previous two iterations of Halo did for console sales, so we're anticipating an incredible amount of demand come the launch of Halo 3," said Microsoft's head of gaming and entertainment Stephen McGill.

"The day one revenue of Halo 2 was the biggest number for the launch of any entertainment property. That has since been surpassed by Spider-Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 3. But we're confident Halo 3 will take back this accolade."

xbox36O broken DS and wii a gimmick ps3 2 expensive PSP got everything u need plenty of gr8 titles and more on the way yes it will always lag behind DS sales but then ever spoilt tantrum throwing ankle snapper has a DS or a Wii

I have a psp lite which I bought after I was let down by 2 xbox 36Os. For me this console is tops, already looking 4ward to the release of the psp3OOO. I use it to play games and do all my emailing etc. A good reliable handheld.

lol an 80 gb psp is not possible unless they use ssd hard drives which cost sh*t loads to buy independantly maybe you should get used to dreaming, though if they stop making any games for it or make a psp that could only get games from the ps3 then y... [ Read full comment... ]

UMD already dead. Sony has nothing to lose by adding
SD stuff on the Blu-ray discs for PSP viewing.

good point but i think i would only pay about $250 and not bother with the touch screen.with mobile tec in there you could play games over the net any time any where but only at a reasonable price of course.

Sony should have added a 40 or 80 gig internal hard drive like the ipod to the psp instead of making it thinner and lighter! With the extra space it would be
