PSP Sales Smash Records News

Less than six months after Nintendo DS set a launch week record for a new console, the PSP smashes through the barrier...
Charttrack, the company responsible for monitoring the sales of computer and videogames in the UK, has today reported that the number of PSP units sold by the end of the first week of launch is expected to top 185,000 machines. The news means that Sonyâs portable console looks set to become the fastest selling new console in the UK ever, surpassing the previous record made by the Nintendo DS of 87,000 on its first week back in March.
But the PSP hasnât just made its mark in the hardware stakes as games for the machine dominate the UK All Format Top 40, which is also compiled by Charttrack for ELSPA. Half of the chart is made up of PSP launch titles with 20 of the 24 releases making it into the Top 40 with Brian Lara International Cricket 2005 the only non-PSP title in the All Format Top 10. Lara, last weekâs number one title, has slipped down to number 2 to be supplanted by Ridge Racer. The game, which features an expansive compilation of tracks and cars from the history of the franchise has been bought by 20% of those buying a PSP title according to the Charttrack report â“ quite an achievement considering the last time a Ridge Racer title reached the top spot in the All Format chart was back in 1999.
The UK All Format Top Ten for the week ending September 3rd is as follows:
- 1) Ridge Racer
- 2) Brian Lara International Cricket 2005
- 3) WipEout Pure
- 4) Virtua Tennis: World Tour
- 5) Metal Gear Ac!d
- 6) Need for Speed Underground: Rivals
- 7) Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition
- 8) TOCA Race Driver 2
- 9) Tony Hawkâs Underground 2: Remix
- 10) Spider-Man 2
All information compiled by ChartTrack and is the strict copyright of ELSPA (UK) Ltd.
Whilst this is the sort of result that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe would have hoped for, a strong second wave of titles for the PSP will be essential for the initial momentum to continue. Weâll have more news shortlyâ¦
