Kutaragi tells US financial network of plans to boost production of the PSP...
In an interview with Bloomberg News, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. President Ken Kutaragi has revealed that the company is looking to expand production of the handheld console outside of Japan, with China and Taiwan being singled out in particular.
As the company struggles to meet demand in Japan and the US, where stock of the machine is completely sold out, the outsourcing of production surely has to be one of the most important decisions to be made if Sony wants to make some inroads into Nintendoâs handheld dominance â“ and this is without the September launch of the PSP in Europe.
The company has expectations of selling 12 million PSP units in the current fiscal year (they are currently on target to meet that with production already at one million a month) but expanding the production into other territories is an absolute must if they are to catch up with the sales of Nintendoâs DS, which is currently double the figure of PSPs at 6 million units.
In the interview, Kutaragi-san said, âWe have to somehow increase our production capacity as we're not prepared to start selling in Europe, we've run out of units in the U.S. and it's still selling well in Japanâ¦We're making the key components here, but we're looking to expand assembly of the product outside of Japan.â
