SCEi confirm a surprising price tag for the PSP...

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCEi) today revealed the highly anticipated price details for the forthcoming release of the Sony PSP in Japan.

Amidst fears of a $300 price tag, Sony today surprised the whole gaming industry with confirmation that the PSP would be released in Japan on December 12th, 2004, for 20,790 yen ($195/Ł106/⑬153).

In addition a second package will also be released for 26,040 yen ($245/Ł133/⑬191); dubbed the âPSP Value Packâ and consists of a Sony PSP, AC adaptor, battery pack, Memory Stick Duo (32MB), headphone with remote control and soft-case and hand-strap.

In addition SCEi confirmed specific details on the wireless LAN features of the PSP, stating that the PSP will be able to connect to the Internet via access points, making it possible for players to download game characters and content whilst also being able to play games online.

For a more âintimateâ gaming experience, a maximum of 16 PSP units can be connected wirelessly through the ad-hoc mode, allowing family and friends to create an instant local online entertainment set-up.

In addition to the crucial price tag, SCEi confirmed that the latest battery consumption tests reveal that game play time will last between 4 â“ 6 hours, whilst continuous video viewing provides between 4 â“ 5 hours.

SCEi took the opportunity to confirm that 21 titles will be released in Japan before the end of the year, whilst restating that over 100 titles are in development, including original titles and adaptations of popular Playstation titles such as WipeOut.

Japanese Launch Line-Up

  • Luminees
  • The Legend of Heroes: Gagharv Trilogy
  • Vampire Chronicle: The Chaos Tower
  • Kollon
  • Need for Speed Underground: Rivals
  • Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf
  • Armoured Core Formula Front

  • Dynasty Warriors
  • Mahjong
  • Metal Gear Acid
  • Mahjong Fight Club
  • AI Go

  • AI Shogi
  • Kotoba No Puzzle Mojipittan Daijiten
  • Ridge Racer
  • Puyo Puyo Pop
  • Dokodemo Issyo

  • Puzzle Bobble Pocket

Finally in recognition of the PSPâs other features, SCEi stated that an entirely new category of entertainment software, merging game, music and video on a single UMD, is expected to be released in Spring 2005 ahead of the release in the West.

The crucial news regarding the pricing and battery life has certainly surprised the industry, and suggests that Nintendo now have more then a fight on their hands with the attractive pricing of the Nintendo DS. The announcement comes relatively soon after rumours suggested SCEi postponed revealing a price in excess of $300 at the last minute, during the relatively recent Playstation Business Meeting 2004.

Weâll have more information soon.

Sony should have added a 40 or 80 gig internal hard drive like the ipod to the psp instead of making it thinner and lighter! With the extra space it would be

JAZZ-1991, what the hell are you talking about? The PSP redesign is 19% slimmer and 33% lighter than the original PSP. The buttons are more responsive, it supports tv out, has twice the RAM. There is no need to make it any smaller, it feels great in ... [ Read full comment... ]
