Speaking to the Japanese press, Kutaragi revealed some interesting information on Sony's entry into the handheld market...
We all knew it was coming; however when Sonyâs long-overdue announcement to enter the handheld market came at last months E3, few could have predicted how important and revolutionary the device would be.
Essentially placing emphasis on new means of media distribution, the PSP should become far more then a handheld games machine, opening the scope to becoming the âWalkman of the 21st centuryâ.
Leading financial experts have recently doubted the PSP ability to compete with the GameBoy Advance in the handheld market, citing that such powerful performance would come at a cost and expected a retail price that would at least be double that of the GBA.
However speaking to the Japanese press; Ken Kutaragi, President SCE, mentioned that the retail price of the PSP will be relatively low, because many of the components are already in mass-production for the Playstation2.
Although Sony has yet to confirm a price strategy for the PSP, analysts previously expected the machine to retail towards the higher end of the 19,000-30,000 yen bracket (~£95-£150); this latest announcement from Kutaragi could suggest the Walkman of the 21st Century may be far more affordable and attractive then we initially thought.
