PSP Power Concerns Arise Again News

Chris Leyton

European report suggests that developers will have to keep an eye on the power demands of their titles…

GamesIndustry.biz is today reporting that developers working on titles for the Sony PSP have been urged to keep an eye on power consumption, amidst concerns that the battery life will not sustain lengthy gaming sessions.

To date Sony has yet to confirm exactly how many hours of gaming we can expect to squeeze out of the PSP, although initial specifications released during its debut at E3 suggested 10 hours of gaming, 8 hours of music and 2.5 hours video.

The article suggests that a battery emulator will become part of the PSP SDK to allow developers to keep a check, whilst claiming that unnamed sources have suggested that Sony are waiting to see what titles like Gran Turismo 4: Mobile Edition and Metal Gear Acid can perform before making any official announcement.

Certainly doubts have been raised throughout the last few months, with some suggestions that such techniques as disc-streaming will be all but impossible on the format due to the heavy power demand needed to constantly access the disc.

Weâll have more information soon.

UMD already dead. Sony has nothing to lose by adding
SD stuff on the Blu-ray discs for PSP viewing.

Sony should have added a 40 or 80 gig internal hard drive like the ipod to the psp instead of making it thinner and lighter! With the extra space it would be
the same size as the Orignal psp but with a hard drive! get the word out maybe they will he... [ Read full comment... ]

JAZZ-1991, what the hell are you talking about? The PSP redesign is 19% slimmer and 33% lighter than the original PSP. The buttons are more responsive, it supports tv out, has twice the RAM. There is no need to make it any smaller, it feels great in ... [ Read full comment... ]
