The acclaimed developer behind Giants: Citizen Kabuto and Armed & Dangerous announces an innovative PSP title...
When the acclaimed developer behind titles such as Giants: Citizen Kabuto and Armed & Dangerous confirmed that it was ditching console development in place of leading the charge on the Sony PSP, it was certainly enough for fans to sit up and take notice (well the few that actually went out and checked out the highly amusing and entertaining games).
As today Majesco confirmed a publishing agreement with Planet Moon Studios, confirming the first PSP title to come from the decision.
"Infected is an original game custom designed to take full advantage of the power of the PSP system," said Bob Stevenson, CEO of Planet Moon Studios. "We look forward to working with Majesco to provide handheld gamers with an entirely new game play experience that's full of new ideas and happens to be one hell of a good time."
Infected looks to continue the trend of Planet Moonās previous titles, and is billed as a "thrilling new run-and-gun shooter", however much like preceding games, the simple concept hides subtle innovations that lurk beneath the action. Taking full advantage of the PSP Wi-Fi communication, players can "invade" opponents' PSP systems via multiplayer victories.
Set in New York City during Christmas time, a strange virus has appeared, turning seemingly normal citizens (in New York?) into the insane, violent Infected. Players take the role of rookie NYPD Officer Stevens, who becomes one of the first victims, but unlike others is strangely immune to the virus. The mysterious Dr. Schaeffer discovers that Stevensā blood can be used to destroy the otherwise invincible Infected, and creates a special "viral gun" that fills shells with blood from Stevens' arm and blasts them straight into the Infected, causing them to violently explode.
The game includes an engrossing single-player campaign with lavishly gory details, however itās the multiplayer modes that are exciting us at this early stage. To participate in multiplayer combat, players create their own character and engage in combat; successfully winning a bout allows you to "infect" the loser's PSP system with your avatar and gain ranking points. Avatars can be defeated through a variety of ways, as well as passed along from player to player thus creating a viral chain letter of attack.
Certainly this sounds to be the type of innovation we expect from the next-gen handhelds and makes an original use of the Wi-Fi connectivity; clan support has been mentioned at this early stage, with the developers hoping that the game will catch on and have virus-like avatars spreading across the globe.
"Infected will certainly be 'socially communicable' in that victorious players can wirelessly invade their opponents PSP systems and spread their unique virus literally around the world," said Ken Gold, vice president of Marketing for Majesco. "This type of compelling game play is further enhanced by allowing players to check their ranking against other players, as well as see just how far their virus has spread."
Infected forms part of a three-game agreement between Planet Moon Studios and Majesco, with two additional PSP title scheduled to be announced later in the year.
With a release scheduled for the Autumn you can be sure that weāll have lots more on the innovative prospect that is Infected soon - we just hope the guys haven't lost their own unique sense of humour.
