PSP-2000 Tunes Into TV News

Sony confirms the remodelled PSP and TV tuner will be released across Japan later in the year...

Alongside confirmation that the release of the lighter, smaller PSP-2000 will be released across Japan on September 20th, Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed that the rumoured TV peripheral will finally launch alongside the newly reshaped handheld.

Slotting into the USB slot on top of the PSP, the TV Tuner receives digital terrestrial channels via Japan's 1seg broadcasting service, suggesting that PSP importers tempted by the device will have a tough time picking up anything beyond a black screen.

More specifically, the service has attracted a level of criticism upon its April 2006 launch on mobile phones, frequently dropping out of signal and attracting a weak signal in moving vehicles when you presumably most need it. Fortunately, the service allegedly works well in the home, though you have to question the need to watch TV on the PSP smaller screen when you could be watching it on a normal set.

It's currently unclear whether the device is built exclusively for the new PSP or will work on older units and whether Sony has plans to release it outside of Japan.

UMD already dead. Sony has nothing to lose by adding
SD stuff on the Blu-ray discs for PSP viewing.

good point but i think i would only pay about $250 and not bother with the touch screen.with mobile tec in there you could play games over the net any time any where but only at a reasonable price of course.

Sony should have added a 40 or 80 gig internal hard drive like the ipod to the psp instead of making it thinner and lighter! With the extra space it would be

JAZZ-1991, what the hell are you talking about? The PSP redesign is 19% slimmer and 33% lighter than the original PSP. The buttons are more responsive, it supports tv out, has twice the RAM. There is no need to make it any smaller, it feels great in ... [ Read full comment... ]
