SCEE executive talks about the Playstation future; PS3 price-point, PSP performance and the possibility of seeing a PStwo…

It somehow passed by without much attention; however a recent interview with David Reeves SCEE President & COO, on the Official Playstation website, today gave a revealing insight into both the Playstation3 and PSP.

Contradicting earlier suggestions of a 2005 Western release, Reeves claimed that he was confident that the PSP will be released before the end of 2004; however itâs unsure whether his comments were in regard to the Japanese launch or as originally planned a worldwide release.

Reeves went on to claim that PSP videogames would not likely feature territorial lockouts, following a similar model to that of the GameBoy. More importantly, Reeves claimed that the system-spec has been increased to 30MB RAM, after developer concerns that the original 8MB simply wouldnât be enough; claiming that the end result is visuals that look âbeyondâ the PS2âs capabilities because âthereâs so much depth and perspective on the screens sizeâ â“ hmmmmâ¦

Moving on to the Playstation3, Reeves backed up the suggestion that the PS3 would incorporate a number of the Home Entertainment features witnessed in the recent PSX and the possibility of a HDD.

Intriguingly, Reeves suggested that Sony might release multiple versions of the Playstation3; one based around the Home Server and offering the multitude of entertainment features found in the PSX, whilst the other offering a stripped down system focussing on games and movies. Reeves suggested that the Home Server PS3 is likely to retail for between 600 â“ 700 euros (£400-£465), whilst the game focussed unit would retail for closer to 200 euros (£132); this is certainly a wise decision, however the difficulty in launching two versions will certainly provide some troublesome times for Sony.

Finally reeves comments seemed to confirm the talk of a re-modelled Playstation2 hitting the market later in the year, presumably under the tag of the registered âPStwoâ.

Strangely the original interview transcript has disappeared from the Playstation website at the time of press; hopefully weâll have more on this soon.
