Toshiba announce ambitious plans to begin manufacturing the CELL processor in 2004…
The fabled CELL processor took a step nearer to reality today, as it emerged that Toshiba executives have been given nearly $3billion to build new factories to mass produce the so-called âsystem on a chipâ.
The funds will be spent over the next four years to build two new plants â“ one for the CELL processor and another to develop new NAND flash memory chips. The CELL plant will be built first of all, and is scheduled to begin production of the processors in the 2004/5 March/April fiscal year.
The move marks the most ambitious spend from a Japanese chipmaker since the industry slumped two years ago. SCE have yet to make any official commitment to the plan, however itâs widely believed that both companies have a mutual need of each other; Toshiba need financial aid to boost the move, whilst SCE needs Toshiba and IBM to work on the chips, rumoured to be the power behind the Playstation3.
