PS3 Price Cuts Galore News

The 'Starter Pack' gets a price reduction and the new £299 40GB 'Entry Level' model is introduced...
As expected, Sony are introducing an 'Entry Level' PlayStation 3 model in preparation for the Christmas rush. Similarly to the Xbox 360's Core SKU, this new 40GB HDD PS3 will come on the market at a much more affordable £299.
Other limitations to the machine include two USB slots (rather than four), no backwards compatibility for PS2 titles and the removal of the multi memory card port. Other than that it's the same as the standard 60GB machine and Sony assures us that customers will be able to upgrade their machines to support more USB slots and a multi memory card port with peripherals if needs be.
The original rumours were that Sony would make this announcement during the week of Halo 3's release. Perhaps they have decided to wait until the hype is subsiding before they spoil Microsoft's party with their new PS3 price range.
Sony simultaneously announced an additional price cut for the standard 60GB model (from £425 to £349). Previously known as the 'Starter Pack', this new 'Value Pack' will retain the two bundled first party titles and one SixAxis controller.
"As we approach our very first PlayStation Christmas, it is satisfying to be able to offer UK consumers the choice of two PlayStation 3 packages both now representing remarkable value," commented Ray Maguire, managing director of SCEUK, "We have a brand new 40GB machine that represents an excellent entry point into the world of High Definition games and movies, and we have the fully featured 60GB machine being offered with two next generation gaming experiences at a highly competitive price."
At £299 and £349, this new PS3 price range looks a little less daunting now. Perhaps I won't have to sell my right kidney in order to get one after all.
