PS3 Outsells Wii In Japan - Again!!! News

Sony's PlayStation 3 continued its magic trick this week but sales figures show some contradictions...
Sony's PlayStation 3 has outsold the Wii by nearly 20,000 units for the second week running in Japan, according to reports from CVG. This is according to sales figures from Japanese firm Enterbrain for the week ending November 18th, where 53,000 PS3 unit sales and 36,000 for Nintendo's Wii were recorded (roughly the same as the previous week).
This is surprising given that Nintendo games hold the top two chart slots (Mario Party DS and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles on Wii). The only PS3 game in the top five is the latest Dynasty Warriors game (which will be called Dynasty Warriors 6 over here), a series that has traditionally been very successful in Japan.
However, these figures are strongly contradicted by another firm which specialises in market data for games in Japan, Media Create. According to the company, the difference between Wii and PS3 sales was more like 3,000 units (with the Wii selling 36,000 and the PS3 39,000).
Either way, both sets of data mark impressive sales for the PS3 which appears to finally be holding its own in the Nintendo dominated Japanese charts. PS3 sales have been flagging since the console's release over a year ago, although recent price drops will doubtless have helped raise the PS3's appeal to Japanese consumers.
The two market data firms did record similar results in the game charts, however, with the top seven spots being near identical. Ninja Theory's Heavenly Sword entered the multi-format charts at number seven, having been released in Europe and the US earlier this year. However, Super Mario Galaxy is proving not to have the staying power in the Japanese charts that some expected, coming home sixth in the charts.
As far as handheld consoles are concerned, Nintendo's DS recently passed the 20 million unit sales mark. The DS reached this landmark in a record two years and 11 months, almost four years quicker than the previous record holder, the PlayStation 2.
