Days after confirming limited backwards compatibility with PlayStation2, SCEE reveals what that chassis change is...


At the end of last week, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced that European PlayStation3s would have restricted backwards compatibility with PlayStation2 titles. SCEE failed to go into any great detail, explaining that the limitations were as a result of a new 'chassis'.

In an interview with the self-styled "semi-independent" PlayStation3 blog Three Speech, Sony representatives unwrapped the key change to the PS3 hardware specification in Europe: "The original PS3 used the Emotion Engine/Graphics Synthesiser to emulate PS2 titles. With the latest European specification we have removed the Emotion Engine, retaining the graphics chip. This has an impact on the number of PS2 titles that will be backwards compatible."

So with no Emotion Engine, the PS2 games will have to rely on software emulation instead. The move follows the same line as Microsoft's strategy for backwards compatibility on Xbox 360, which has enabled over 200 original Xbox titles to be playable on the next-gen system.

this a good thing over 9 yrs it will happen folk wiil soon tire of wii's and the xbox(which is nearly all shooters, fun 4 a while, but ps3 does more in all ways
