Sony releases its financial performance for the past three months; PS3 edges ahead of its older sibling for the quarter...
Perhaps it was the Metal Gear Solid 4 effect, but Sony Corporation has today confirmed that global hardware sales of the PlayStation 3 surpassed the PlayStation 2 during the company's first quarter, which ended on June 30th.
Sales of the younger monolith topped 1.56 million units, only just managing to pip its older sibling by 0.50 million units.
Eight years into its proposed ten year life cycle, global sales of the PS2 dropped by 1.15 million units during the past three months whilst the PlayStation 3's year-on-year performance increased by 0.86 million units. Both were outdone by the PSP, which (thanks to a continued resurgence in Japan) out-performed the combined totals of the two consoles, with over 3.72 million units.
As a 'segment', Sony's Game's division saw year-on-year sales for the quarter of 16.8%, thanks mainly to the performance of the PlayStation 3 and the PSP. Sales increased by nearly ¥35 billion (£163.5 million) to ¥229.6 billion (£1.07 billion), with the division also recording a small operating income of ¥5.4 billion (£25.2 million), reversing an operating loss of ¥29.2 billion (£136.3 million) the year before.
News of Sony Computer Entertainment's success in the past three months comes just weeks after Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices Division (which houses the Xbox 360) announced its first fiscal year in profit.
