Sony Computer Entertainment releases the first details on "Home" for PlayStation3 owners...
Rumoured in recent weeks, Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today lifted the wraps on its answer to Microsoft's GamerCard and Nintendo's Mii; not to mention, Linden Labs' Second Life, EA's The Sims and News Corporation's MySpace.
Dubbed the "first-of-a-kind" 3D online user community, "Home" will be offered as a free download later in the year that resides permanently on the XMB. Promising a truly distinctive take on virtual communities, Home provides a platform for PS3 owners to interact, communicate, join online games, share content, and create their own personal space, in a world featuring strikingly polished visuals that bring a virtual community to life. Home exhibits the typical Sony sense of style; a sleek, modern, environment broken up into spacious common areas, game specific places, and personal apartments, with a design that should allow for future additions.
Every Home user has an apartment, which can be tailored with a variety of furniture, art, and other items to suit a consumeristic stance on virtual communities. SCE is working with partners outside of the videogames industry to participate in its homely vision. Having spent a small fortune in Home's equivalent of a virtual IKEA, boastful Home owners can invite friends around to continue the bragging and watch personal videos, pictures and other digital content stored on the HDD. Further still, Home's "Hall of Fame" allows PS3 owners to continue the competition amongst one another with 3D trophies that are unlocked in future PS3 titles.
"This is a significant step forward in the area of user community services and emergent entertainment experiences," said Izumi Kawanishi, Corporate Executive and CTO Software, SCEI. "While the 3D graphics demonstrate the power of PS3 and the PLAYSTATION Network, the most impressive feature in Home is the variety of ways in which multiple consumers, as well as our third-party partners, can experience the next generation of communication by interacting and sharing among each other. I feel strongly that this unique blend of community, user-generated content, collaboration and commerce will expand the future of computer entertainment."
After a series of dubious decisions, Home finally appears to throw some weight behind Sony's costly vision of next-generation entertainment. Home will move into a closed beta-test this spring, although SCE are refusing to elaborate on a general release beyond sometime later in the year.
