Further details on the Playstation3 GPU and what it means to the future of games...
Having impressed a gaming world with a first look at the powerful graphics architecture behind Playstation3, Nvidia today delivered details on its âRSXâ graphics processor for the Playstation3.
Connecting directly to the CELL processor, Nvidia presented real-time demonstrations of the processor in action along with a presentation of Epic Games experience with the chip in action. The demos highlighted just how the âRSXâ will enable Playstation3 games to create stunning, immersive environments, insanely detailed and believable characters, resulting in experiences beyond what was previously thought possible.
RSX is billed as the âmost sophisticated graphics processor ever builtâ, representing over 1500 person years of investment. When combined with the CELL the âRSXâ provides an astounding 2 teraflops of floating-point calculations, with the total number of transistors featured on the chip weighing in at an unbelievable 300 million â“ more then the total number of transistors in both the CPU and GPU of the GameCube, Playstation2 and Xbox combined.
The RSX helps to ensure that the PS3 supports high definition of 1080p as standard, eclipsing the 720p standard dimensions of Xbox 360.
Development on the first PS3 titles and middleware technology has already begun, which will provide full support to new content creation by providing developers with extensive tools and libraries to maximise the potential of the CELL and RSX processors. AGEIA Technologies became the first official Playstation3 middleware partner, providing a powerful physics based middleware toolset based on its NovodeX technology. Designed with a multithreaded architecture, the technology is ideally suited to maximising the true potential of the Playstation3 and has gained support from some of the worldâs leading developers and publishers including Shiny Entertainment, Spark Unlimited and Ubisoft for Ghost Recon 3.
The only angle that SCEI refused to comment on was that of online and their future direction for the Playstation3; with Microsoft so focussed around Xbox Live and what it means to Xbox 360 it will certainly be interesting to discover what the future holds for Sony in this area.
