Sony quick to dismiss reports suggesting the PS3 this year...
Reports emanating from the East suggesting that Sony were going to pull the wool over Microsoft and Nintendoās eyes by releasing the Playstation3 this year, were today dismissed by Sony representatives.
A report in a Taiwanese publication suggested that SCE were going to begin prototype production of the PS2 towards next month, with the indication to release the Playstation3 in Japan by the autumn and aiming towards a Christmas 2003 release in the US.
Whilst surprising the industry and gaining the advantage to win the next console-war is something we certainly could see Sony doing, we suspect the truth is probably far less exciting. Itās simply too early for the PS3 to release this year; for starters practically every publisher has a strong line-up of PS2 titles in development beyond 2003, are they all going to convert over to the PS3 or start from scratch? You would also suspect to hear some information in the years leading up to the release; either Sony is the quietest company in existence or there simply isnāt anything to talk about at the moment. What we do know is that prototype production of the CELL processor began last year, so itās entirely probable that Sony do have a very finalised design and possibly even a mock-up of the PS3 in action.
Itās been suggested that the final specification was made available to developers at the recent Game Developers Conference; unfortunately no word has yet appeared as to whether this did indeed happen, weāll do our best to uncover some further information.
We expect the hype surrounding the Playstation3 to begin reaching a fever pitch soon; itās highly likely that the PS3 will make some sorts of appearance at this years E3 ā“ although whether the majority of us get a look is another matter!!!
