SCEE team up with Digimask to create games that allow you to incorporate your own 3D model based on you...
Although importing your own face within a videogame has been promised many times before, with Rare infamously ducking away from including the option to include your face in 'Perfect Dark' via the GameBoy Camera after Nintendo's alleged intervention; SCEE today confirmed a partnership with DigiMask to do just that.
For the first time ever, gamers will be able to incorporate their very own, fully animated 3D head into comparable Playstation2 games, simply by taking two photos of their face. Using the incredible EyeToy peripheral to capture the images, together with Digimask revolutionary 'Personal Head Creation' technology, the two images are converted into a full 3D model of that person's head. This can then be stored onto a Memory Card for use in other games that support the technology.
SCEE already has several games in development that will take advantage of the technology, with the first scheduled for release in July 2004. Players could become the face of the game's hero, or even have all their friends as a squad in multiplayer games; they could see themselves driving a round of the World Rally Championship or starring in their favourite football team. The possibilities are quite simply endless.
Jamie MacDonald, Development Director at SCEE's London Studios, said: "EyeToy has proved phenomenally successful, with over 2.4 million units sold to date, and it is central to our drive to enable everyone - no matter what their age or gender - to have fun with their PlayStation 2. The Digimask technology will allow our development teams to explore entirely new avenues of gaming possibility, bringing a whole new dimension to gaming."
Gary Bracey, Founding CEO of Digimask said: "We are delighted that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has chosen us as their partner to help bring the ultimate personalisation into gaming. There will soon be over 2 million PlayStation 2 users with the capability of using the Digimask technology, and we anticipate that demand for compatible games will be very high. We are now talking to third-party developers/publishers about licensing this for integration into their games. The marriage of EyeToy and Digimask is a perfect combination."
It's once again a stunning example of the innovation currently undertaken at SCEE; continuing to push the EyeToy and the Playstation2 into new areas such as this, will continue to drive PS2 sales during what should be a period of decline for the format. If the concept takes off it's also another insult to Nintendo, who first mooted the idea back in 1998.
We'll have more information on this very soon.
