Mario and Sonic will be duelling it out on DS and Wii in everything from trampolining to pole vaulting...
Fifteen years ago, the chances of Sega and Nintendo working together on a game would've been about as unlikely as Greece winning the European Cup. Fifteen years on and the crazy world in which we live has seen both things happening, what with Sega publishing the upcoming Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games in Europe/America, and Nintendo taking on publishing duties in Japan.
Not only that, but Mario and Sonic will compete side-by-side for the first time ever in a wide range of events (20 in total) on the Nintendo DS and Wii:
- Fencing - Individual épée
- Archery
- Shooting - Skeet
- Gymnastics - Trampoline
- Gymnastics - Vault
- Field - High Jump
- Field - Pole Vault
- Field - Long Jump
- Field - Triple Jump
- Field - Javelin Throw
- Field - Hammer Throw
- Rowing - Single Sculls
- Table Tennis - Singles
- Aquatics - 100m Freestyle
- Aquatics - 4x100m Freestyle
- Track - 110m and 400m Hurdles
- Track - 4x100m Relay
- Track -100m and 400m
On the Wii, players will be able to chose from 16 characters (eight from the Mario universe and likewise from the Sonic world), each of which has a specific strength - Sonic and Yoshi are speedsters, Knuckles and Bowser have impressive strength, Peach and Tails boast good technical skill, while Mario and Amy are the all-rounders.
The Nunchuk and Wii Remote will be utilised to good effect, with gamers simulating swimming strokes, swinging the Remote to throw the hammer and notching the Nunchuk to shoot arrows. All this will be brought together in a series of game modes from 'Single Match' to 'Circuit Mode', and when you're worn out from all the athleticism, a nifty trivia/quiz game to test and expand your Olympic Games knowledge.
Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games will brandish official licenses from the International Olympic Committee and is due out on the Nintendo Wii and DS on November 23rd this year and the first quarter of 2008 respectively.
