The Father of PlayStation confirms far fewer PlayStation3 systems in both North America and Japan for launch...
With European gamers reeling from today's jaw-dropping (yet not all together surprising) news of a delayed launch of PlayStation3, it seems that even the North American and Japanese gaming communities will feel the pinch of component shortages.
Speaking about what is looking like a disastrous birth for Sony's next-gen system, Ken Kutaragi has said that the number of PS3 units in North America on day one will be a lowly 400,000 - though Japanese gamers will be left to squabble over just 100,000 units. Making the announcement, Kutaragi-san sais, "We've been working hard to try to tackle the problem, but we see the delay is inevitable."
Today's announcements will inevitably give Microsoft further breathing space as it tries to push Xbox 360 to that magical 10 million unit figure by the end of 2006 - but surely the likely winner from the PS3 delay will be Nintendo, who can now launch Wii without the intervention of one of its rivals.
We'll have more news shortly...
