No Shock As MS Drops HD-DVD News

With the 'High Def Wars' now over, Microsoft confirms the end of its external HD-DVD drive...
In an incredibly unsurprising move, Microsoft has today announced that it will no longer be manufacturing its external Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive, following the demise of the HD-DVD format in recent weeks.
A statement released by vice president of the software giant's media and entertainment division, Blair Westlake, commented "Xbox will no longer manufacture new HD DVD players for the Xbox 360, but we will continue to provide standard product and warranty support for all Xbox 360 HD DVD players in the market."
The final death knell for the high def format came when manufacturer Toshiba pulled out of the race; Microsoft has also left the HD-DVD Consortium.
The external drive, which remains available to buy at various retailers for a heavily discounted price, launched in the UK in February 2007 for £199. Toshiba President, Atsutoshi Nishida, recently revealed that around 300,000 Xbox 360 HD-DVD drives had been sold globally during the lifespan of the drive.
