Relying on technological improvements won’t work for Sony according to Nintendo...
Following on from the hugely successful launch of the Nintendo DS across America and Japan, Satoru Iwata President Nintendo Co. has today shrugged off the challenge of the impending release of the Sony PSP.
Sticking firmly to his belief that games are getting too complicated and turning people away, Iwata-san stated that he doubts the PSP will attract new fans in the same way as the Nintendo DS, claiming that the old-style formula of relying on technological innovations simply doesnât work.
"PSP has been created with the assumption that the golden success formula is still working. We don't believe that," Iwata said at the Foreign Correspondents' Club. "We're making every effort so that people will say we were right."
Certainly itâs games such as Nintendogs â“ a title that allows you to look after a virtual puppy â“ that seems to be the future direction for Nintendo; and whilst Shigeru Miyamoto did acknowledge that itâs an unusual type of game, he did highlight Nintendoâs target audience aptly â“ âWeâre focussing on our market, ages 5 to 95â.
As TVG previously predicted, European gamers will finally get their slice of the action in March 2005; although the Japanese publisher stopped short of confirming a specific date.
