Nintendo DS + Xbox 360 Share 2006 Success Across North America News

The eagerly awaited NPD figures reveal both Microsoft and Nintendo enjoyed a good Christmas...
Although the Yuletide battle between Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony was considerably less fierce across Europe, (thanks largely to the non-show of the latter), figures released from the NPD Group today revealed that Xbox 360 won the next-gen war during the crucial Holiday season across North America.
Outselling all competitors throughout November and December, NPD figures reveal that the Xbox 360 shifted 1.1 million units during December, selling more 360's then Playstation3 and Wii combined during the month. The success has opened up a 51% early share of the North American next-gen market for Microsoft, who will also see global sales of Gears of War pass the 3 million mark before the end of the week.
Countering the success of Microsoft, Nintendo laid claim to a successful Wii launch and the title of the best-selling videogame device for 2006 with the Nintendo DS. More than one million Wii's were sold in North America since its launch (604,200 in December), whilst combined sales of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on Wii and GameCube reached 1.5 million - 900,000 of which were shifted on Nintendo's new console. Throughout December, Nintendo shifted 1.6 million Nintendo DS units, bringing the total sales of the popular handheld throughout 2006 standing at 5.3 million.
"Millions of players, both hard-core and brand-new, are already enjoying the unique entertainment provided by Wii, but demand for the system remains incredibly high," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "So our work is just beginning. We're dedicating ourselves to maximizing both manufacturing and distribution full bore throughout 2007, to make sure everyone who wants to experience the future of video gaming can do so just as soon as possible."
Currently sitting in the unfamiliar position of third place, sales of the PlayStation3 throughout December reached 490,700, bringing the total number of units shifted across North America to 687,300 - hopefully, for Sony's sake, reports of shortage issues being eased aren't far from the mark and the system finds a release in Europe as soon as possible.
