Nintendo DS European Launch News

By Chris Leyton on 27/01/2005 Nintendo makes the first move, confirming a street date and price for the DS...

Nintendo today made the first move in the impending next-gen handheld battle, with confirmation on the European release date and price for the Nintendo DS.

At a European event, Nintendo confirmed an extremely attractive £99.99 price for the DS which is scheduled to arrive on European shores on March 11th – a week earlier then the rumoured launch for the Sony PSP. Having shifted over 2.8 million units worldwide, Nintendo confirmed an allocation of 650,000 units for Europe.

Thankfully the launch line-up looks a little stronger then that which accompanies the formats release across America, with 14 titles confirmed to ship alongside the system. These include:

  • Wario Ware Touched!
  • Super Mario 64 DS
  • Rayman DS
  • Asphalt GT
  • Project Rub
  • Polarium
  • Sprung
  • Tiger Woods PGA Golf
  • Spider-Man 2
  • The Urbz
  • Zoo Keeper
  • Pokemon Dash
  • Mr Driller: Drill Spirits
  • Metroid Prime: Hunters

Games for the Nintendo DS have been priced at the extremely reasonable cost of £29.99.

Featuring PictoChat software embedded within the system, the European launch will follow that of the American and come bundled with a demo of Metroid Prime: Hunters. Nintendo have earmarked a hefty 35 million euros to launch and promote the new format, centred around the slogan of "Touch Me".

Stay tuned for further details...

I once owned a DS lite and spent many hours playing it. I think it is ideal for the younger gaming generation although for me personally the psp is far better. I think in comparrison to the psp the nintendo ds is slightly overpriced.

I play pirated DS ROMs and I don't live in the US - and I know of at least one other person who does. Since Christmas 2006 I also calculate that I have spent approximately £700.00 on games software, £700.00 on hardware and about £200.00 in subs for a popular fantasy-based MMORPG. Hardly justification for illegally downloading games then, but, I would argue, with 6 family members actively gaming and pursuing an interest in some of the latest games technology, we ARE consumers and we do spend a high proportion of our income on games and consoles. And my family is not unique. My justification is that Microsoft would rather users pirated their software than that of their competitors. Although less disingenuously and more likely is the fact that I do it because I can. None of my other consoles are chipped and I buy legal copies of PC games and pay my subs to play online. I'm not naïve and I know Nintendo is a business and needs to make a profit to survive, but even though DS games are generally less expensive in comparison to other formats, they are not available at pocket money prices and, let's be honest, they are aimed primarily at kids. And hey, while I'm at it, I used to tape music in the 1980s - but the music industry is still going strong...
