By Gwynne Dixon on 18/06/2008 EA confirms the next instalment in the Need For Speed series and admits "torturing" the series' dev team...Speaking at a stock conference with investors, EA's CEO John Riccitello has announced Need For Speed Undercover, the next instalment in the long running series of driving games. The title is likely to be released later this year during the usual autumn window.
Riccitello explained that the series should show significant improvements this year as EA has added to the headcount at the NFS studio in Vancouver and split its development cycles:
"One of the things we're doing up in Vancouver with that team is we've had them for 8 consecutive years on a 12 month dev cycle. Last summer we added to the headcount and split the team in two, so now there's two teams on a 24 month cycle and this is our first 16 and a half month game (because we didn't do it far enough ago to give us a full two year dev cycle). Next year's title will be a full two year dev.
"We were torturing a very talented group of people up in Vancouver, which makes it harder to be as innovative every year and now I think we're going to get better from here. So, I'm confident that Undercover is a much better game than Pro Street and I expect that from this point forward we'll do a lot better."
EA bigwig Riccitello also spoke of NFS Pro Street's average gameplay and how the Vancouver team hopes to combat this with Undercover:
"I was pretty disappointed with Need for Speed last year. I thought it was an okay game in terms of gameplay, if not good, but who wanted Pro Street? It was this sort of made up, put numbers on the side of your car and pretend to drive your Ferrari or Porsche where?
"This year we are Need for Speed Undercover, with a very strong mission structure . . . It's a much richer proposition and there's a huge and embedded storyline behind it. Need for Speed was always about the fictional hook of what made you want to be part of the driving. We resurrected the game when we bought out Most Wanted and then Underground, with the chase and be chased or the whole underground ethos of street racing at 3 O'clock in the morning. Now we're coming back with a strong narrative hook so I feel really good about the title."
Expect the official announcement from EA - with all the trimmings of trailers and screens - in the not too distant future.

Seriously, people give EA way to much crap. Give it up, they do the best they can and they do it well. Prostreet was pretty boring, but it was still a good game. And so were the rest of the newer series. If I had a choice i'd rather pick the underground games, instead of their classic NFS boring pick a car and race crap. I'm looking forward to this game. As I am to any other NFS game.

Ok its "EA" dont expect anything soo great. The best NFS was NFSU2 since we were able to glitch into free roam online and play Team Freeze, Manhunt and Drag down strips, and the headset compatibility was what made that work good. I would love to see everything from NFSU2 with some other good features that you could think of to make the game better. The cops are really not a must i prefer to just drive around online and hang out. Dont have a glitch in this game into free roam have it an option and maby 8 players instead of 4 this time would be great too. Seriously are you not disappointed that they took NFSU2 servers down? If they didn't i would still be playing it with the other 200 or so people that have a love for that game.

all you need is to expand the story of most wanted coz dat was a fat off game even on the ps2 version the graphics were good but i like to see spinner and hydrolics and maybe even chases ack in the game

You should be able to make your own personalsed number plate. Also a race tra sugar could drive to from free roam and had to pay to get in would be cool. I would like to see neon lights, spinners and hydralics back in the game. One more cool feature would be creating your own driver like in create a player in nba live/fifa soccer ect. Finally I would like to see a massive line-up of 100+ cars including a Ferrari.

undercover should have evrything that all the things that the other need fro speeds had. They need to have the career/story mode then for online make it like test drive unlimited so that the peole that want to drive around wherever they want will be happy but you are still able to jump from race room whenever you want but besides that, the story line looks good. just make sure the cops are even harder to lose id like more of a challenge underground series did have a lot of real car parts like the bumpers skirts mirrors chop tops thats what and then the cpu needs to be more challenging because i beat need for speed games in a couple days eswpecially the most recent ones

NFS Undercover needs to have a free roam mode. Pro Street was not that bad but it was very one sided. This game should go along with most wanted and carbon if you ask me.
