Mr Pro Evo Speaks News

Jon Wilcox

In an interview with Konami Europe, the man behind the Winning Eleven (Pro Evolution Soccer) franchise talks football and the future…

Arguably the most effective representation of the beautiful game, the Winning Eleven (Pro Evo) series of football games has continued to push the boundaries of realism with each and every incarnation. And with PES4 released on PS2 last week, with the Xbox debut expected next month, Konami Europe managed to corner Mr 'Seabass' Takatsuka, Producer of the series whilst at the European PES 3 tournament in Nice.

As well as the usual questions that youâd expect, Takasuka had some very interesting responses, especially those that dealt with the future of the franchise. Even though the Xbox version will include an online section, the PS2 does not, and when asked about the reasons behind that decision, Takasuka responded with:

âIn the PS2 [online] service, we have to create our own game servers and that kind of thing so that's why we had to pass on this one [PES4â¦we're waiting for Sony to construct a better infrastructure for PlayStation and also the users be hooked up on broadband. I'm pretty sure we're going to have [online] on PES5 for the PS2."

He also confirmed that PES5 will be the final title for the current crop of consoles, with PES6 making its debut on the next-gen machines. It was inevitable that questions would be asked about whether a PES title would be released for the forthcoming PSP platform, and Takasuka did mention that there was, âcurrently nothing really concreteâ¦we're in the concept development stage to utilise what's best for the PSP handheld game.â

And when asked to look to the ultimate goal of the series, he replied, âone of our final goals is to have 11 versus 11.â Sounds like the Pro Evo series is going to have a very long life span, and push ahead with radical ideas well into the next-generation of consoles.
