David Cameron reveals a new hard line on violent video games as part of larger policy plan...
Not a year goes by without a power hungry politician trying to grab the limelight by throwing around that old political ragdoll, the violent video game. Two years ago it was Hillary Clinton publicising herself via the GTA 'hot coffee' fiasco, now it appears that David Cameron is getting in on the act.
According to reports from The Guardian, Mr. Cameron made these comments today while he introduced new Conservative policies on law and order:
"We are never going to deal with crime unless we look at the broader context and say, 'Yes, tough laws, strong action on the police, but also action to strengthen our society'.
"And that includes, I think, video games and things like that where we do need to think of the context in which people are growing up."
Hungry for media attention, Cameron's administration made a number of rudimentary errors in their criticisms of the NHS last week. We can only assume that Cameron's hints of further bans for violent video games (a la Manhunt 2) are similar cries for the media limelight.
The Conservative shadow cabinet has been sending out hot and cold messages to the UK Games Industry of late. Earlier this month, Shadow Secretary of State Jeremy Hunt told MCV that there would be substantial funding for the UK games industry with a future Conservative government.
Now, with Cameron's comments this morning, it seems that the Conservatives wish to clamp down on an increasingly important portion of the gaming market.
