Mizuguchi Splits From Sega News

Acclaimed director behind 'REZ' and 'Space Channel 5' heads to pastures new...

Unconfirmed reports spreading around the Internet today suggest that acclaimed director, Tetsuya Mizuguchi, is to part ways with SEGA.

The talented team leader previously headed United Game Artists, where he created âSpace Channel 5â and more importantly the cultural phenomenon that was âREZâ. Before this, Mizuguchi-san had worked on a host of racing titles during the glory SEGA years, which included the likes of âSega Rallyâ, âSega Rally 2â, âManx TTâ and âSega Touring Carsâ to mention but a few.

Heâs departure from SEGA is surely a result of the recent merger between U-GA and Sonic Team, sadly wiping out any chances of seeing what Yuji Naka (Sonic Team head) and himself could have created as an artistic duo.

However true SEGA fans should take solace in the fact that this means the chances of seeing âREZ2â are more likely. Mizuguchi-san love of âREZâ was well documented and indeed his passion for music, games, synasthesia and the global rave scene; presumably in their current state SEGA could never give the go-ahead to a game that had âweakâ sales at best and this is likely to be the defining factor that led to Mizuguchi-san departure.

If reports are led to be believed, then Mizuguchi-san has plans to open up his own development studio allowing him the creative freedom to create such games.

Itâs certainly hard news for SEGA fans; seeing one of SEGAâ most influential developers looks as though the bricks are crumbling down, letâs just hope it doesnât set a trend for the rest of them.
