Now that the dust has settled on Activision Blizzard, whispers on the next potential merger continue...
By far one of the biggest pieces of news to break in the run up to Christmas was the merger between Activision and Vivendi Games, leading to the subsequent creation of Activision Blizzard. A bolt out of the blue that hit the games industry like an ice-cold shower, the move was sudden and unexpected, and has left many peering into crystal balls in a bid to predict where the next mergers will come from.
The latest publishers to rear their heads above the murky depths are Viacom owned Midway and UK outfit SCi (Eidos), two companies that were engaged in early merger talks a few years ago. In a report earlier today, US industry publication Next-Gen revealed that a source from within a 'major game publisher' had claimed that Midway is one of the many parties interested in SCi - something that Midway has so far declined to comment on.
SCi have been attracting a lot of interest in recent months, with Time Warner and Ubisoft both cited in a report made by The Times newspaper in September 2007, though the current state of talks with both companies (and a third, undisclosed Chinese company) are unclear.
