Bungie and Microsoft confirms the date when the multiplayer beta will go live...
Bungie and Microsoft Game Studios have today confirmed that the Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta will begin on May 16th at 1pm, allowing gamers with marked copies of Crackdown or successful applicants from the Rule of Three promotion, to take part in the test.
Three maps will be available, Snowbound, High Ground, and Valhalla, with the Beta featuring a number of additions to the Halo universe such as the Mongoose ATV, the Spartan Laser, and Brute Spiker weapons.
"'Halo: Combat Evolved' and 'Halo 2' changed the face of console gaming forever," said Shane Kim, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Game Studios. "Gamers from around the world have logged more than 800 million hours on Xbox LIVE playing 'Halo 2,' and years after its launch it remains the No. 1 title on our Xbox LIVE network. Bringing an early look at the multiplayer elements of 'Halo 3' to our passionate fan base is tremendously exciting for us."
Today's news comes as Bungie releases the latest behind the scenes look at Halo 3's development, following the "Et Tu Brute?" video. Focusing on the multiplayer gameplay in Halo 3, it's apparent that the team at Bungie are more than passionate about their project. At times though, it did seem that their reactions were more akin to some of the annoying gamers found on Halo 2...you know, the "You guys suck!" kind.
Footage of the game itself however does suggest that there's a lot to do if Halo 3 is going to make the visual leap required to put it on par with some of the other Xbox 360 titles already at retail - including Gears of War. Hopefully the Seattle team are still in the process of refining the look, because it's difficult to see how much of a push is being made to stop Halo 3 from resembling a High-Definition version of Halo 2.
Microsoft has confirmed that the Multiplayer Beta will run until 7:59am on June 7th.
