Microsoft's Peter Moore Resigns News

Former SEGA man leaves as Microsoft seek a new direction for Xbox (and presumably a tattoo removal expert)...
In a surprising twist, Microsoft today announced the resignation of Xbox head-honcho Peter Moore, with former EA president Don Mattrick stepping into his role as senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business from July 30th
The news comes as a shock given Moore's charismatic stance in the videogames industry and unwavering devotion to pushing forwards the Xbox brand, but comes at a time of increased suggestions that the Xbox 360 has hit an impassable barrier. As sales of the Xbox 360 appear to stall across the globe, Microsoft's issues in creating titles that break past the "hardcore" image and appeal to alternative audiences are becoming increasingly evident. Whilst Sony has failed as-of-yet to capitalise on this, Nintendo have won market-share at a phenomenal pace and appear to be certain favourites to establish an unassailable lead in the "next-gen" war.
Microsoft labelled Moore's reasons as a desire to relocate his family back to the Bay Area and an unknown new opportunity in the videogames industry; but we'd expect little else from an official comment. Surprisingly, Moore has yet to comment on the announcement himself, though early details suggest the move could rekindle his passion for sports as president of EA Sports.
"Peter has contributed enormously to the games business since joining Microsoft in 2003 and we are sad to see him go," said Robbie Bach, president of Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. "Since that time, he presided over the global launch of the Xbox 360, spearheaded a revitalized and rebranded Games for Windows business, and helped steer the console's ascent."
"While Peter will certainly be missed, we are delighted to have one of the industry's most talented and passionate veterans on board to lead the business," Bach said. "Don is well-known and respected throughout the industry for his deep knowledge, technical expertise and management savvy. Under Don's leadership, the games team is looking forward to embarking on our biggest holiday ever, with a wide-ranging roster of some of the most highly anticipated titles."
"Over the past two decades, and the past few months in particular, I've worked closely with many of Microsoft's top leaders and I've always been impressed by their talent, passion and commitment," said Mattrick. "I'm thrilled to join an already strong team that's delivering truly amazing gaming experiences to customers around the world. I've never been more excited about the future of the industry, and firmly believe Microsoft will lead the next great innovations in gaming."
