Microsoft pledges support to HD-DVD, although collaboration comes to late in the day for Xbox 360...

Confirming an alliance based on a mutual respect, Microsoft yesterday pledged support for Toshibaâs HD-DVD in the impending next-generation DVD stakes.

By sharing each otherâs respective hardware and software technologies, the collaboration is designed to accelerate the availability of devices for consumers and will commence the development of HD-DVD products using Windows CE technology. Both companies also mentioned their intention to strengthen their development on iHD, the latest interactive format recognised by the DVD Forum.

Following on from the announcement, Bill Gates Chairman and Chief Software Architect of Microsoft confirmed that the agreement would not affect the impending release of the Xbox 360, but stated that future versions of the Xbox would likely utilise Toshibaâs next-gen DVD technology.

Weâll have further information soon.
