Microsoft: We've Won The Core Gamer Market News

Xbox 360's Group Product Manager declares the race for the core gamer is over; Greenberg admits Europe remains a battleground...
Despite shifting its strategy in recent months to targeting the casual market, there's little doubt that Xbox 360 is a core gamer's console. In an interview today however, Xbox 360 Group Product Manager, Aaron Greenberg has gone one step further, stating that the console has "secured the core buyer".
Greenberg's bold comments came as part of a wider interview with US-based industry side, Next-Gen.biz, in which the Microsoft man aired the opinion that the launch of the PlayStation 3 was too late for Sony to form a strong comeback against the Xbox 360:
"We're heading now well beyond 20 million in console sales. I feel we've secured that core buyer, and that gives us quite a bit of an advantage versus PS3, which is late to the game...We think we'll continue to extend our lead over the PS3 over the course of the year."
But despite claims that they've secured the core gamer in North America, the Group Product Manager knows that it's far from the end of the battle, especially in Europe: "Sony is a very formidable competitor in Europe... the core consumer is still very much up for grabs." Microsoft yesterday announced that since they dropped the price of the Xbox 360 on this side of the Atlantic back in March, the sales rate of the platform had more than doubled.
In the latest round of North American hardware sales figures, the NPD Group has revealed that whilst the Xbox 360 rose above the PlayStation 3 (due mostly to a drop in PS3 sales), both consoles continue to trail Wii, with the Nintendo console selling 721,000 units. Sales of the Xbox 360 topped 262,000 units, whilst the PlayStation 3 dropped to 257,000 units.
