Microsoft Set To Release Three Xbox2 Models??? News

A report on The Inquirer suggests that the Xbox2 will be released in three different versions, one of which closely resembles a PC...
The Inquirer is today reporting Microsoftās intention to release three models of the Xbox2, one of which appears to be a fully functioning PC device, whilst the other two are based closer to a home console ā“ one with a HDD, the other without.
Itās believed that the leak stems from a presentation held within the UK, suggesting that the Xbox 2 and Xbox 2 HD are planned for release in Autumn 2005, followed by the launch of the Xbox 2 PC in Autumn 2006.
Although itās highly speculative, the report goes on to state more specific details on the three different versions. Naturally the standard Xbox2 without a Hard-Drive comes about because of the well documented issues Microsoft have with the pricing of the format, whilst the Xbox2 HD will offer increased functionality because of its inclusion. More interesting is the description of the Xbox2 PC, which is alleged to be an entry-level PC that runs Windows along with other PC software. The device includes a CD burner, wireless keyboard, mouse, controller and features connectivity to High-Definition TVās or a PC monitor. The format will apparently run *most* PC titles and will be heavily based around the Windows Media Centre.
Itās certainly an intriguing piece, and follows comments in May that suggested the Xbox2 would bear a closer resemblance to a PC.
However it would be a risky decision for Microsoft, with history proving that consumers donāt take kindly to too much choice and complexity; certainly if Microsoft wants to continue pushing the Xbox brand to the masses and not just a niche end of the market that would appreciate such a move, we have to question the validity of such a decision.
At the time of writing Microsoft were unavailable for comment, so this must be treated as pure speculation at this stage; weāll hopefully have an official statement on the subject soon.
