Microsoft Cut Xbox 360 Prices In The US News

Although there are no plans for a similar price reduction in Europe...
Microsoft has announced that they will be reducing the price of each version of their Xbox 360 system by $50 in the US on August 8th. The announcement comes as Sony simultaneously announced that, as of yesterday, their 80GB PS3 (which was previously revealed at E3) will be available in shops for $599.
The Xbox 360 reduction has been timed to coincide with the release of Madden NFL 08, which is scheduled for release on August 14th. The game series was the biggest selling game of last year with Madden 07, and the top-selling franchise of the last ten years.
"The fact that we have been able to keep our launch price longer than any other console while retaining our leadership position demonstrates that consumers believe in the value of Xbox 360," said Mitch Koch, Corporate Vice President, Global Retail Sales and Marketing Group, Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. "On the eve of the best holiday games line-up ever and the launch of Madden NFL 08, there has never been a better time to jump into Xbox 360."
There were rumours of such a cut in the US for a number of months, although Microsoft doesn't appear to have any plans to make a similar price reduction in Europe any time soon. Similarly, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has no plans to reduce the price of the PS3 in the region, but recently announced a bundle offer including MotorStorm, Resistance: Fall of Man and two SIXAXIS controllers, while retaining the same £425 price tag.
The price cuts in the US will leave the Xbox 360 system priced at $349.99, the Xbox 360 Core System at $279.99, and the Xbox 360 Elite console at $449.99.
