Microsoft CES'07 - IPTV, 10m+ and Lionsgate News

Few surprises in a keynote speech as Microsoft continues to expand its commitment towards digital content...
Speaking at the traditional pre-show keynote speech at CES 2007 in Las Vegas, Microsoft's Bill Gates and Robbie Bach took the opportunity to reveal a new service for the Xbox 360; expand their commitment to HD content and pat themselves on the back with sales figures for the next-generation format.
Although early rumours of an Xbox 360 v2.0 proved to be unfounded (at this stage at least), Microsoft lifted the lid on a new service for the Xbox 360 in the shape of Internet Protocol TV (IPTV). Combining the Xbox 360 with Microsoft TV IPTV Edition, Robbie Bach provided a glimpse at the new service which is expected to provide a "world-class" TV experience with advanced functionalities such as digital video recording capabilities and video on-demand.
Microsoft TV IPTV Edition is essentially an evolved version of the defunct MSN TV service. Collaborating with the likes of Philips and Motorola to manufacture enabled set-top boxes, BT has also agreed to use the technology to power its vision of becoming a content provider. Currently the service is under way with five of the world's largest service providers along trials with 11 additional companies, representing a position across 14 different countries.
Microsoft has confirmed a provisional Holiday 2007 release for the combined service, with content from providers that are deploying TV services based on the Microsoft TV IPTV Edition platform.
"Our goal is to make entertainment more personal, more interactive and more social," Bach said. "IPTV on Xbox 360 and Xbox Live are powerful examples of ways we are bringing together the worlds of gaming, TV viewing and community to make it easy for people to access and discover their favorite content and share their personal experiences with the communities they are part of."
Continuing the theme of high-definition content and the launch of Video Marketplace content throughout North America, Comedy Central's Senior Vice President Caleb Weinstein celebrated the service claiming, "Xbox 360 has become one of COMEDY CENTRAL's leading digital distribution platforms."
Whilst Europe waits patiently for the service to commence across the territory, Lionsgate confirmed their position as the latest partner to embrace the service, bringing a line-up of HD films that includes "An American Haunting", "Blair Witch Project", "Crank", "The Descent", "Employee of the Month", "Hard Candy", "Ninth Gate", "The Punisher", "Requiem for a Dream", "Saw III", "See No Evil" and "Stir of Echoes".
"This partnership is great for Lionsgate. The Xbox gamer is the same moviegoer who wants to watch 'Saw III' or 'Crank', said Jon Ferro, executive vice president of Lionsgate. "That is why we are so thrilled to bring Lionsgate films to Xbox Live Video Marketplace. Bringing our content to this audience makes perfect sense and reflects our commitment to remain at the cutting edge of content distribution to new media platforms."
Despite suggestions in recent months that Microsoft might fail to meet its target shipments, Bach finally confirmed during the speech that over 10 million Xbox 360 units have been shipped since the end of 2006. Back in December, a defiant Peter Moore, Vice President of Interactive Entertainment, went as far as saying that they were on course to exceed 10 million, something that they easily accomplished by over 400,000 units. Further figures from the speech indicates Microsoft's ambition to meet previous targets of between 13 and 15 million Xbox 360s and over 6 million Xbox Live subscribers by June 2007.
