Dun, dun, duh… New Zealand takes offence to the latest controversial title from RockStar…
We didnât think it would take too long, and we werenât certain which country would be the first, as it emerged today that New Zealandâs government has banned Rockstarâs latest controversial title âManhuntâ.
Chief censor Bill Hastings claims that the game âcrosses a lineâ by rewarding âextreme violenceâ.
Unfortunately the move clearly outlines the general consensus towards the evolving video games medium. Much like the film industry used the horror genre to create new ways of telling a story, videogames developers are using the same ideas to push game experiences beyond the traditional one-dimensional experience. Sadly the mainstream still sees videogames as childâs entertainment and refuses to let videogames evolve as an entertainment medium much like film and music is today.
The news follows closely after Rockstar were forced to remove controversial scenes in âVice Cityâ, following an outburst from the American-Haitian community.
