The ESRB announces that Rockstar's newly UK-banned Manhunt 2 has been given an initial AO rating in the states...
Having already received word from the British Board of Film Classification that the upcoming Manhunt 2 has been refused a rating in the UK, banning it from being sold in Blighty, Rockstar Games' parent company has this evening confirmed that the game has also been given an initial Adults Only rating across the pond.
In a statement to GamePolitics, Take-Two Interactive commented:
"The ESRB has issued an initial rating of AO (Adults Only) for Manhunt 2.
We believe the process of rating videogames is to help people make informed entertainment choices and not to limit them. Manhunt 2 was created for mature audiences and we strongly believe it should receive an M (Mature) rating, aligning it with similar content created in other forms of media. We are exploring our options with regard to the rating of Manhunt 2."
The highest rating given by North America's rating board, if the ruling sticks, it will mean that Manhunt 2 will not be stocked in most mainstream retailers including Wal-Mart. Reports from the US have also suggested that Take-Two are reviewing their options for the game.
