Let It Be True - Jet Set Radio Returns? News

By Chris Leyton on 31/07/2008 SEGA updates a trademark to one of its finest moment during the hallowed Dreamcast era...

Now before we start getting all excited about the possible return of SEGA's legendary Jet Set Radio series, it's worth remembering that an update to a trademark isn't necessarily an indicator that a new game is in the works.

That said, SEGA have recently re-registered Jet Grind Radio (the American title) at the US Trademark & Patent Office, and we're hoping for this more than snow at Christmas and chocolate at Easter.

For anybody who missed it the first time around, Jet Set Radio was an unbelievably awesome Dreamcast title, which mixed skating, graffiti and social corruption into one stunning looking cell-shaded package. A sequel followed later on the original Xbox, but disappointingly failed to match the charm of the original with its attempts to streamline the experience into something more people could enjoy (they didn't and it ended up being bundled for free alongside SEGA GT 2002 with the Xbox).

The appearance of 'downloadable game programs' and 'hand-held game machines' in the trademark registration, leaves us hoping SEGA might be porting the original to Xbox Live Arcade/PlayStation Network, or even better, a new title on the DS. Hopefully the sight of 'mobile phones' is just SEGA covering their backs or perhaps plans for the iPhone, if indeed the trademark update is suggestive of their future plans for the series.
