SCEI boss reveals the prospective capabilities for the continued Holy Grail for Sony – convergence...
Speaking at the 2005 Tokyo Interactive Digital Conference, Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi has revealed the future of digital entertainment and convergence, according to Sony at least. By utilising the power of the CELL processor (which will be powering the forthcoming PlayStation3), it was announced that up to ten High-Definition channels will be capable of being viewed simultaneously with zoom and rotation functionality, including web pages, games, TV channels and movies. Comparisons with technologies seen in Hollywoodâs Minority Report and Back to the Future Part II are sure to be made by anyone witness to the video will testify.
Revealing a timeline for technological evolution, Kutaragi-san spoke of how over the next five years screen resolutions will take a gigantic leap from current levels through to 4k by 2k pixels running at 240 frames per second. Estimates given at the event put PlayStation3 games running at approximately 120 fps (though todayâs TVs fall far beyond that figure.) Putting that into perspective, standard PC monitors generally display 1280 by 1024 pixels at 70-90 fps with non-HD ready TVs displaying around 768 by 576 pixels (PAL territories) at 50/60 frames per second.
For the short term perhaps the most tangible element of the speech was that the video used to demonstrate the potential capabilities of CELL used an interface close to that of the PSP, with some questioning whether this marked the first time that a Work in Progress GUI for the PlayStation3 was on showâ¦
The speech also suggested a future where the CELL would be shrunk from its current size of 90 nanometres to 60 nanometres, and eventually to 45 nanometres, and where CELL powered servers could work together to produce processing powers of 25.6 teraflops; itâs worth noting that 40 of these servers would break the next processing barrier of one petaflop (yet another large number that defies comprehension.)
The speech had more to do with the future of CELL than the PlayStation3, but itâll be interesting to see how the processor is applied to the next-generation console, which will act as the guinea-pig for the chip when itâs released in Spring 2006.
