Kutaragi Goes On The Warpath News

SCE President defends PSP ‘glitch’ whist denouncing recent Sony strategies…
If itâs one accusation that canât be laid at the feet of Sony Computer Entertainment President, Ken Kutaragi, itâs that heâs a shy and retiring kind of chap. In the space of two days he has managed to share with the world his dislike of Sonyâs previous strategies and today heâs been defending allegations of a glitch in his latest creation, the PSP.
Yesterday the âFather of PlayStationâ commented that for years he felt frustrated at the slow pace that Sony Corp. reacted to new sectors thus failing to compete successfully. In his address at the Foreign Correspondents Club in Tokyo, Kutaragi-san cited the firmâs reluctance to use MP3 files as one of the more recent errors. Kutaragi seems to be somewhat happier now though and stated that "we're growing up." Incidentally, a sign of Sonyâs increasing maturity can be seen prominently in the new PSP, which is MP3 and MPEG-4 compatible and leads quite nicely into Kutaragiâs strong defence of the new portable system.
In this weekâs Nikkei Business magazine, Kutaragi defends recent claims that the PSP has a glitchy Square button that is unresponsive and sticks. The report claims that 0.6% of the PSPs sold since the systemâs launch on December 12th, approximately 4,800 units, have been returned to Sony for repairs. Rather than admit that this a design flaw in the system, Kutaragi-san claimed that the âglitchâ was actually down to how the unit was played.
"I didn't want the liquid-crystal screen to be any smaller than this, and didn't want to make the game machine itself any larger. The button positions are exactly where I wanted them to be. Those are the specs. I made the machine myself based on such specifications. I made it with clear intentions, and I don't think I made any mistakeâ¦I think I made the most beautiful game machine in the world. When a prominent architect comes up with a plan, nobody is going to pick holes in it and say, for instance, the position of the gates isn't right. The same is true with our PSP."
Weâve started to place bets on who the âFather of PlayStationâ will pick a fight with next â“ our personal favourite fantasy bout is between Kutaragi-san and Nintendoâs Yamouchi-san â“ weâll have more soonâ¦
